Ethiopia Tikur Anbessa
Intelligentsia
It is no coincidence that the world's most complex and delicate coffees come from the place coffee was born. Ethiopia's forests create the perfect growing environment for coffee, which is why it decided to show up there in the first place. The 2019 edition of Tikur Anbessa, named for Ethiopia's Black Lion, is roaring good, with persistent sweetness, juicy citrus acidity and complex floral notes.

Colombia CoE #3 Bourbon
Intelligentsia
The Cup of Excellence is the world's most prestigious coffee quality competition. We purchased not one, not two, but three winning lots from this year's Colombia CoE auction. Two of them are Pink Bourbon varietal lots. Our quality team calls the one from Finca La Miel "a monster coffee," and it placed 15th. This one, from the El Chaferote farm of Luis Gerardo Bravo Ordóñez, was good enough for third place. It tastes to us like tangerine, pineapple, and black cherry.

Nicaragua Flor Azul
Intelligentsia
The Canales family began growing coffee in a quiet valley in northern Nicaragua in 1958. Since then, the family has tripled the size of its Los Delirios farm, steadily purchasing surrounding pastures and converting them to shaded organic coffee groves. Daniel Canales, the second generation owner of Los Delirios, won the top prize at the 2004 Nicaragua Cup of Excellence. His three boys, Milton, Norman, and Donal, have continued the tradition, investing mightily in improvements in post-harvest processing to increase quality. Milton grew this lot in the remote Los Monos section of the farm and dried it in the shade at his new dry mill.
